What's   Up   With   Hunting   in   Colorado

AGREEMENT REACHED ON ELK LICENSES    The Division of Wildlife has reached a legal settlement with the Gunnison Citizens Wildlife Association that will allow the sale of 4,200 cow elk licenses instead of either-sex elk licenses in three game management units near Gunnison. The cow elk licenses will be sold at Division offices beginning Aug. 18 along with licenses leftover from the drawing process. Over-the-counter bull licenses will also be valid in units 54, 55 and 551. Either-sex elk licenses will be sold in the remaining 45 units during the second and third rifle seasons as planned. ELK AND DEER LICENSE FEES WON'T INCREASE    Hunters won't pay more for elk and deer licenses in 1998 or 1999, Colorado lawmakers decided Friday as they killed a proposed license-fee increase. Colorado's license fees, which haven't gone up since 1990, are among the cheapest in North America, making the state a choice destination for hunters nationwide. Although the purpose of the bill was to bring fewer hunters into the field, estimates indicate the measure would have increased state revenues by $6 million to $8 million as well.
